Last June a chrome Mickey sat above the entrance of the Hôtel Martinez, and people crossed the street to photograph him. When Cannes Lions came around again, Disney wanted the same ledge and a bigger idea. Mickey and Minnie together, hand in hand, in gold, standing over the front door of the festival's most photographed hotel.
A pair is harder than one. Two figures holding hands have to be inflated, tensioned and rigged as a single sculpture, because if either one settles, the gesture breaks. Gold shows every seam in the Riviera sun, so the pair was checked every morning and evening for the full week. Chrome was the introduction. Gold was the invitation back.
